Workout Schedule

Exercise is vitally important, we all know this. Exercise can help control weight, boost moods, boost energy, help fight off chronic health conditions and diseases, promote better sleep and better sex.

For me, routine is key when it comes to exercise. I have a fairly regimented workout schedule. In fact, I have a pretty regimented schedule in general. If you’ve ever read Gretchen Rubin’s book, Better than Before, I’m considered an “Upholder,” which means I’m pretty good with habit formation and sticking to routines that are important to me — and exercise is very important to me.

By the way, if you haven’t read Better than Before, you absolutely should. It’s by far one of my favorite books. In it, Gretchen talks about how to master habits and how doing so looks differently for various personality types. This book helped me learn how I respond to the outside world and how I can make and stick to habits that are important to me.

Back to exercise though…Not only do I appreciate routines, but I also appreciate variety. I get bored very easily with one set exercise, so I’ve purposely built-in time for yoga, swimming, rock climbing, weight lifting, and walking/hiking into every week. It’s best to know yourself in this area, though, as some folks may prefer more of the same type of exercise rather than too much variety. On a normal week, here’s what my exercise routine looks like:

In order to workout as much as I do, I have several gym memberships and a personal trainer that I meet with on a weekly basis. Several memberships aren’t necessary though if you prefer to workout in the same gym, do not require a lot of variety in your workouts, or prefer to workout outside or at home. Again, it’s important to know yourself and what will help you stick to a routine.

I do, however, recommend checking out ClassPass, which is how I’m able to take so many Strength & Conditioning and Bike Classes. ClassPass is an all-access membership to a global network of fitness studies offered in most major cities. The App is super easy to use, the membership cost is reasonable, and ClassPass is great for those who travel quite a bit and still like to  workout on vacation. I highly recommend it — it’s truly changed my life and drastically improved my workout routine!

By the way, once you commit to a regimented workout routine you crave the workouts and feel like you’re missing a big part of your day if you miss a workout. It’s a hard habit to form, but once you’re there it truly adds value to your life in multiple ways.

In future posts, I’ll talk about the benefits of each of the exercises I do on a regular basis and a little more about why I include each of them in my weekly routines. Stay tuned!
